Enhancing a homes exterior
A home's exterior is always on display. It is the first thing people see when driving up to the home. Owners trying to sell their home, hope that potential buyers do not drive by because of what they have seen. Creative landscaping can turn ugly areas around the home into an eye-catching oasis. Bare spots where grass refuses to grow can be transformed by the creative use of rocks and hardy ground cover.
Just because grass will not grow does not mean other plants will not. Start by encircling the larger trees with plastic or metal edging. Once the edging is secured lay, some weed barrier down and plant some shade loving plants. Then fill around the plants with colorful river or lava rock. Owners can place larger stones or driftwood inside the circle, as well. This may also be an ideal spot for a birdbath.
Owners that simply cannot get grass to grow anywhere because of shade or soil conditions should consider filling in portions of their yard with river rock. The rock is typically small enough to walk on comfortably, yet will not wash away in a heavy rain. Once the rock is down owners can use retaining wall blocks to build flowerbeds. If building beds on either side of the driveway ensure they have the same symmetrical design. Retaining walls can also turn a sloping lawn into a tiered flower garden.
Before designing a flowerbed close to the home's foundation, ensure there are gutters installed. Runoff from the roof can damage flowerbeds and cause erosion in the yard. Typically, the taller plants will be placed closet to the wall. Taller plants in front simply do not look good and they will prevent the smaller plants from getting the proper amount of sun.
Owners are only limited by their imagination. Landscaping to cover ugly areas can be done in stages. Owners may want to experiment with various plants and designs. Using plants that are native to the area will reduce the time spent in tending them. Pay close attention to the plants watering needs, as well, and plant according to typical rainfall amounts.
